Clasado outlines future role for prebiotics

Published: 23-Nov-2022

"As we look ahead to the future of the health and nutrition industry, prebiotics are set to play a core role"

Clasado Biosciences has shared its perspective on how the rapidly emerging prebiotic category will evolve in the coming year.

Offering health and nutrition businesses around the globe valuable clues as to how prebiotics could influence the health and nutrition sector in 2023, Clasado Biosciences predicts exciting new product development opportunities for nutritional supplement brands and their formulators in response to changing consumer demands.

Steven Riley, Head of B2B and Corporate Marketing at Clasado, said: “With extensive scientific research becoming more accessible, we are reaching a real golden age in health and nutrition and the key for 2023 is in expanding applications. Sports health is a great example of an area of potential enormous prebiotic growth, and we expect to see greater focus on the ‘gut-muscle axis’; a term used to describe the relationship between the gut microbiome and athletic health. Sports health formulations, which typically focus almost exclusively on protein content, may see nutritional profiles strengthened through the integration of prebiotics. Studies, including the research portfolio behind our own prebiotic ingredient, Bimuno GOS, indicate very strong potential for prebiotics in athletic health product applications."

There is a tremendous amount of opportunity available as consumer demand for better gut health surges, and we look forward to seeing how formulators respond to an evolving and proactive health market

Riley continued: “The continued ‘merging’ of food and health nutrition is also likely to stay on top of the agenda for formulators, and it’s an indicator of how our relationship with wellbeing is evolving. There is clear movement towards everyday health solutions such as nutritional supplements, to keep the body operating at its best, rather than simply addressing illness when it happens. We first saw this changing consumer behaviour with the rapid expansion of daily multivitamins, and we are likely to see this expand out into other key categories. Prebiotics supplements and emerging categories such as synbiotics are perfect candidates.”

Projected by intelligence firm Grand View Research to see a global compound annual growth rate of almost 15% to 2030, Clasado Biosciences has seen the rising demand for prebiotics first hand, expanding its operations in territories across Europe, Asia, North America and Australasia.

Riley added: “We also see a change in terms of formulation and production. Around the globe and across countless industries, there is rising cost pressure to control supply chain costs and protect the bottom line. For the health and nutrition industry, this may result in a more critical eye on effective dosage levels for functional ingredients. Essentially, each component of a product formulation must work harder to deliver value, particularly while scientific backing to earn consumer trust is so important."
