Functional ingredient for joints improves muscle strength in the knee

Consuming dairy products enriched with Mobilee, Bioibérica's functional ingredient for joints, improves muscle strength in the knee

Regularly consuming dairy products enriched with Mobilee improves muscle strength in the knee, especially in males over the age of 50 with joint discomfort.

This was the result of a new study conducted by Bioibérica in collaboration with the Centro Tecnológico de Nutrición y Salud [Technological Center for Nutrition and Health] of the Universidad Rovira i Virgili, in Reus (Tarragona, Spain), recently published in the online version of the journal Food & Function.

The nutritional intervention study (randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled) included 80 volunteer participants with moderate knee pain, a symptom of incipient osteoarthritis. They were then split into two groups: one group ate a daily fat-free yoghurt supplemented with 80mg of Mobilee, and the other group ate the yoghurt with no added ingredients.

Muscle work was assessed objectively using an isokinetic dinamometry device. After 3 months of consumption, the group taking Mobilee presented improved work, potency and maximum muscle strength in the affected knee.

These results confirm those obtained in another six preclinical studies, three clinical studies and one meta-analysis conducted by Bioibérica since 2010. 'In all of the studies we have conducted, we have seen that Mobilee improved the mechanical and muscle function of the joint and reduced pain in people with knee discomfort,' stated Daniel Martínez, Human Health R&D Director at Bioibérica.

Mobilee is a functional ingredient containing high amounts of hyaluronic acid, polysaccharides and collagen, which has been approved as a Novel Food by the European Commission and was granted GRAS (Generally Recognised as Safe) status in the United States. It is the first ingredient showing benefits in preserving joint mobility and muscle strength that can be added to foods for daily consumption. 'We are highly accustomed to seeing foods enriched with omega-3, calcium, vitamins and iron. But, until now, there was nothing for preserving joint health,' explained Martínez.

Spain has been the pioneer country in innovation in this regard. During the last year, the first dairy beverage enriched with Mobilee to protect and preserve joint health has been marketed. This sports drink is marketed by Central Lechera Asturiana and Sport Life.

Bioibérica has also done stability, safety and toxicity studies showing that this new ingredient is a safe, stable product that does not change the smell or the taste of the food to which it is added.
