Low sodium krill oil opens the door to approved blood pressure health claim in Europe

High sodium intake is associated with higher blood pressure, which is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease

Dietary supplement companies looking for an edge in the European market can now make a blood pressure-related health claim on their labels simply by incorporating Enzymotec’s unique low sodium K•REAL krill oil into their products.

K•REAL is the only pure krill oil that meets the criteria needed to make a ‘low sodium’ claim under the EU’s Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation. In turn, this means supplements containing K•REAL can also carry the health claim: 'Reducing consumption of sodium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood pressure.'

Dr Ariel Katz, President and CEO of Enzymotec, said: 'This benefit is exclusive to K•REAL. No other krill oil offers sodium levels as low as ours does, creating an opportunity for dietary supplement manufacturers and marketers to give their products a unique selling point that will be compelling to their consumers.'

High sodium intake is associated with higher blood pressure, which is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease, particularly strokes and heart attacks. Cutting back on sodium in the diet is a simple way to reduce the risk of heart disease. Enzymotec will showcase the low sodium benefits of K•REAL on Stand 7F59 at the forthcoming Food ingredients Europe exhibition, which takes place in Paris from 1-3 December 2015.

K•REAL is produced using Enzymotec’s proprietary MSO (Multi-Stage Oil) extraction process. As well as resulting in lower sodium levels than other krill oils, this guarantees a high quality oil with superior organoleptic properties compared with other commercially available products.

K•REAL krill oil offers better absorption of omega-3 by the body than fish oil. This results in enhanced bioefficiency, because more omega-3 reaches the red blood cells, where it can target organs such as the brain, heart and liver. With K•REAL there are no fishy burps after consuming it, and it is produced from krill that are harvested sustainably by Enzymotec’s carefully chosen suppliers.

Dr Katz added: 'The omega-3 supplements market is highly competitive and a tough space to operate in. But with its unique low sodium benefit, K•REAL is an unbeatable choice of ingredient for manufacturers and brands seeking a powerful proposition that will ensure their products stand out on store shelves.'
