Mibelle Biochemistry has introduced FenuKale Nu, an antioxidant-rich powder extract made from blue fenugreek and kale. The ingredient is designed to protect the skin from the negative effects of air pollution. Exposure to UV rays, ozone, CO2, and particulate matter lead to accelerated skin ageing, collagen diminution, skin barrier dysfunction and chronic inflammation. These environmental factors even impact at the DNA level and can change the epigenome. The exposure to particulate matter can accelerate undesired epigenetic ageing for instance.
Study findings demonstrate FenuKale Nu can mitigate the undesired effects of air pollutant through an interplay of three different mechanisms, Mibelle says.
First, the ingredient detoxifies cells from unwanted free radicals, a serious ageing factor This significantly reduces levels of carbonylated proteins, a marker for cellular damage.
Second, it reduces negative effect on the epigenome of skin cells, which improves the modification pattern of proteins when treated long-term with urban dust.
Lastly, FenuKale Nu lowers the risk of chronic inflammation and improves skin barrier dysfunction Reduces the release of anti-inflammatory markers cytokines IL-8 and CCL-2.
A placebo controlled clinical study was conducted in a highly polluted area, where certain skin parameters were compared. Volunteers noted a significant improvement of their skin moisture after taking 350 mg FenuKale Nu daily over a period of 56 days. The trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) is an important indicator for a healthy functioning skin barrier. In the same randomised, double blind, placebo controlled clinical trial, the TEWL significantly improved as well. This was reflected in the high satisfaction scores participants gave when asked to rate their skin status, such as hydration, luminescence, and texture.
