The high consumer demand for an alternative to monacolin K is what drove Pharmactive to develop the black garlic extract

Pharmactive has unveiled a new black garlic-based extract. ABG10+ is a novel generation of aged black garlic extract that is a safe and natural alternative for cardiovascular health. The bioactive compound in the extract is S-Allyl Cysteine, analysed by HPLC and titrated to 0.1%.

Monacolin K use (obtained from Red Yeast Rice “RYR”) is becoming more restricted by the European Food Safety Authorisation. This has contributed to growing alarm amongst consumers. Due to its identical structure to lovastatin (a pharmaceutical drug), it has been related to several side effects at different dosages (3-10 mg/day).

The high consumer demand for an alternative to monacolin K without the side effects is what drove Pharmactive to develop the ingredient. The other benefits of ABG10+ over monacolin K is that it targets LDL-cholesterol, HDL/LDL balance and heart function, not just LDL cholesterol. Furthermore, it has a greater antioxidant activity.

  • Properties of the extract:
  • No smell and no pungent taste characteristic of garlic
  • Innovative ageing process
  • Not irradiated, not OMG
  • Mechanism of action identified in in vitro studies & in vivo
