Olive-based nutricosmetic boosts skin hydration and elasticity in new clinical study

Nexira's polyphenol-rich, upcycled olive fruit nutricosmetic Oli-Ola improved skin elasticity by 13%, while reducing TEWL by 12%

A new clinical trial has highlighted the skin health-boosting potential of Nexira's beauty from within nutraceutical, Oli-Ola.

The premium olive fruit extract, which is rich in antioxidant polyphenols such as hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol, has now been proven to enhance key skin parameters such as hydration, elasticity and evenness.

These results come at a time when the ingestible beauty market is gaining rapid ground, attracting consumers searching for natural, holistic solutions from a wide range of demographics.

"Consumers are increasingly looking for multifunctional ingestible beauty solutions to complement their topical cosmetics as research uncovers the role of nutricosmetics in skin, hair and nail health," states Nexira's Health Global Marketing Lead, Leslie Lannebère.

"We are also seeing an interest in sustainability, which Oli-Ola complements due to its upcycled status. Derived from the by-products of olive oil production, we are transforming agricultural waste into a high-value, environmentally conscious bioactive," she adds.

To assess how Oli-Ola fares as a beauty from within ingredient, the company conducted a 12 week, placebo-controlled clinical study — recruiting 132 women to evaluate the nutraceutical's efficacy in promoting skin health.

During the trial, participants experienced:

  • A 13% improvement in skin elasticity
  • A significant (12%) reduction in trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) — allowing the skin to remain more hydrated
  • Skin that is visibly more radiant and moisturised
  • A reduction in dark facial spots

Meanwhile, nutrigenomic insights gained through the company's IN-TEST-PASS model found that Oli-Ola could reduce oxidative stress markers by 59% in skin samples.

It also triggered the upregulation of antioxidant defence genes, suggesting the nutricosmetic can combat early signs of skin ageing.

According to Nexira, Oli-Ola is easy to formulate with, and can be incorporated into a wide range of delivery formats, including gummies, capsules and powders.
