Why metabolic health matters now
The numbers tell a stark story: an estimated one in every four adults is currently living with metabolic syndrome, globally1. This represents a huge number of consumers experiencing risk factors such as high blood sugar, fatty liver, elevated cholesterol, or abdominal obesity. These concerns don’t just affect long-term health outcomes, they shape quality of life, productivity, and daily energy.
As awareness grows, consumers are looking for solutions they can trust, with preference given to those that are plant-based, clinically studied, and responsibly sourced. They want products that don’t just promise, but deliver measurable support for the challenges faced most often: maintaining healthy blood sugar and blood lipid levels, sustaining cellular homeostasis, and supporting the body’s natural detox pathways.
A modern take on an ancient spice
Against this backdrop, Akay Bioactives developed Clovinol®, a water-soluble extract from clove buds (Syzygium aromaticum). While cloves have been celebrated in traditional medicine for centuries, Clovinol translates that heritage into a modern, clinically validated solution. Backed by seven published studies including randomized controlled trials, Clovinol has been shown to support glucose and lipid metabolism, bolster antioxidant defences, and promote liver detoxification.
Designed for real-world use
Clovinol is standardised for consistent polyphenol content, produced using a gentle hydroethanolic extraction process, and offered as a formulation-friendly powder. It is vegan, non-GMO, allergen-free, and Halal/Kosher certified, making it suitable for the broad spectrum of clean-label and convenient format applications. With its taste-minimised flavour profile, Clovinol integrates seamlessly into capsules, sachets, beverages, gummies and chews.
Mindful sourcing and responsible production practices
Just as important as what Clovinol delivers is how it is sourced and transformed into its final form. Today, the clove buds used in Clovinol are cultivated in Sri Lanka’s Kandy, Kegalle, and Matale districts, where the trees thrive in deep, well-drained soils under 1,500–2,500 mm of annual rainfall. Cultivation follows natural rhythms, with flowering beginning around five months after planting and buds requiring another 5–6 months to mature before being hand-picked at peak potency and sun-dried to preserve their bioactive compounds. Dried clove buds are then sourced through trusted local partners to ensure consistent quality and traceability.
As part of the Oterra Group, Akay Bioactives bridges the gap between local sourcing and global impact. In alignment with Oterra’s climate action strategy, Akay has committed to science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets, independently validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the most recognised organisation globally for developing methods and criteria for effective corporate climate action. By 2030, these targets aim for a 42% reduction in direct and energy-related emissions and a 25% reduction in value-chain emissions.
A timely solution for a pressing problem
For brand owners, formulators, and CMOs alike, the opportunity is clear: to create supplement solutions that effectively address today’s metabolic health crisis while meeting consumer’s expectations for plant-based, transparent, and clinically substantiated products. In Clovinol, Akay Bioactives offers not just another nutraceutical extract, but a meaningful response to the health and market realities shaping our industry today.
