Pycnogenol® shown to improve hair density in menopausal women

New research reveals a safe and effective path for women who face hair thinning, a condition commonly experienced in menopause

A new study published in Health Sciences Reports reveals a natural and effective path for women experiencing hair thinning during menopause. The double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study analysed 63 menopausal women between the ages of 45-60. The results showed that oral intake of Pycnogenol® significantly increased hair density, decreased transepidermal water loss in the scalp skin, and optimised resting flux of the scalp. This indicates that Pycnogenol® supports hair density in menopausal women.

During the study, 33 women took 150mg of Pycnogenol® a day (50mg three times a day, with meals), while 30 women took the placebo. Hair status and response were documented at baseline, two months, and six months. Hair density increased significantly in the Pycnogenol® group from the baseline of 225.8 hairs/cm2 to 293.6 hairs/cm2 after two months, a 30% increase. The Pycnogenol® group also experienced a 23% increase in hair density after six months. In contrast, the placebo group experienced a non-significant increase in hair density after two and six months.

Further analysis showed that the increase in hair density after Pycnogenol® supplementation was associated with an improvement of scalp microcirculation, as blood flow was improved. Resting flux of the scalp skin decreased by 21% after two months and by 44% after six months. Additionally, a significant transient decrease in transepidermal water loss was observed in the Pycnogenol® group, but not the placebo group. The measurements were taken with a Vapometer.
