The recent closure of the Peruvian anchovy fishery has once again focused attention on a topic that periodically surfaces within the omega-3 industry: supply security.

Whenever a major fishery experiences disruption, questions naturally arise about ingredient availability, pricing and the industry's ability to meet future demand. Those are important conversations to have, but they can also distract from a larger issue that deserves equal attention.

The greatest challenge facing the omega-3 category is not a temporary supply disruption. It’s the fact that, despite decades of scientific research and widespread consumer awareness, most people around the world still do not consume enough omega-3 fatty acids.

That reality presents both a challenge and an opportunity for our industry.
