Good gut health: the key to a good headspace

Published: 24-Jul-2023

Research continues to support the link between our gut microbiome and brain, known as the “gut-brain axis”, and the relationship between a healthy gut and a healthy mood

The trillions of bacteria in our gut that play an important role in digestion also produce neurotransmitters sending signals throughout the body: and these play a major role in cognitive health. Cognitive health, mood, and stress tolerance may be supported by good gut bacteria. A healthy gut microbiome may also promote good digestion, help maintain regularity, and a help support immune health.

At the beginning of 2023, Stratum Nutrition became the North American distributor of Bimuno®, a unique targeted prebiotic which contains a proprietary composition of galactooligosaccharides (GOS). Bimuno® feeds and stimulates the growth of bifidobacteria in the gut. As non-digestible fiber, it passes through the upper gastrointestinal tract until it reaches the large intestine, where it is utilised by beneficial bacteria. Bimuno® can be used in a wide range of applications and is suitable from infants to elderly.

Bimuno® promotes gastrointestinal wellbeing by helping to reduce gas, reduce bloating, and reduce associated abdominal discomfort, while also helping maintain regularity. Bimuno also helps support immune health. In fact, the most recent clinical study on Bimuno showed support of upper respiratory health in elite rugby players. Bimuno® has the capability to support cognitive wellbeing, as shown in clinical trials where subjects taking Bimuno experienced reduced cortisol levels, which is the hormone that helps you cope with stress, and experienced lower anxiety associated with gastrointestinal symptoms. Research has also proven Bimuno®’s ability to help improve social skills in children with autism on exclusion diets.

The science behind Bimuno® is one of the most comprehensive of any commercially available prebiotic. Bimuno®’s safety and efficacy are supported by over 110 scientific publications and more than 20 clinical studies. The chemical structure of Bimuno ensures its specificity for bifidobacteria – a type of naturally occurring, beneficial intestinal bacteria. Other prebiotics lack this selectivity and can therefore be metabolised by many types of microbes, beneficial or otherwise. Clinical research has proven that Bimuno is rapidly utilised by the gut microbiome, raising levels of bifidobacteria in as little as 7 days.
