Developing an orally delivered product is not without its challenges, and Aelius Biotech understands that well. Not only do they understand it, but they made it their mission to help companies get the data needed to tackle some of the problems they face during the new product development process.
How can Aelius Biotech help you?
Aelius Biotech has developed the first gastrointestinal model that bridges the gap between the digestion and absorption models currently available. Their model stands out due to the use of the company’s novel, patented, cell-compatible mucus that turns standard 2D cell models into 3D systems capable of simulating digestion, mucus permeation and epithelial absorption in a single in vitro model.
How does it work?
The assay consists of 4 distinct layers:
- Digestive fluids and enzymes simulate the breakdown of ingested substances.
- The cell compatible mucus layer serves as a protective barrier, replicating the shielding effect observed in the human digestive tract.
- Epithelial cells replicate the absorptive function, allowing us to observe and measure nutrient and drug absorption with precision.
- Transwell membrane mimics the physiological separation between the luminal and basolateral compartments allowing for quantification of the nutrients or drug absorbed.

Why would you need an integrated model?
The Aelius Integrated Absorption Model combines dynamic secretions and gastrointestinal transit with physiologically relevant modelling of mucus permeation and small intestinal absorption. This integration enables the testing of a wide range of products, including excipients, pharmaceuticals, metabolites, functional foods, beverages, and even whole meals, to provide predictive modelling of small intestinal absorption. The Aelius Integrated Absorption Model is a powerful tool being used by pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and food technology companies to gain valuable insights into their products therapeutic, functional and nutritional properties.

- Accelerate development timelines and reduce risk?
- Enhance credibility and consumer trust?
- Reduce reliance on animal testing?
The robust data generated by Aelius’ in vitro model is of increased physiological relevance and can be used to make pivotal go/no-go decisions even during the early stages of the R&D and new product development process.
Does your product work in the large intestine?
Aelius Biotech also offers advanced large intestinal models designed to replicate the complex human colonic microbiome. These systems allow for realistic assessment of how formulations interact with and influence the microbial population and its activity. These models are highly scalable, available at 1:1 physiological scale for evaluating finished formulations, or in scaled-down formats ideal for screening multiple formulations in parallel.
Aelius Biotech’s models can be run in isolation or in combination to simulate the full digestive process, from the mouth to the large intestine, providing a comprehensive view of how formulations behave throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract.

And Aelius Biotech doesn’t stop there!
Their recently launched BITE Trials are a streamlined, cost effective and results-driven human trial service for the evaluation of nutritional supplements and functional foods to support marketing and scientific claims. Focused on rapid, small-scale human trials for food safe products, this service is designed to be cost-efficient while measuring key indicators such as blood markers, biometric changes, and questionnaire responses.
