FDA to help manufacturers meet new Nutrition Facts label requirements

During the first six months following the first January 2020 compliance date the FDA now plans to work cooperatively with manufacturers

The FDA issued a final rule to extend the compliance dates for the Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts label and Serving Size to 1 January 2020 (manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual food sales would have an additional year to comply). The FDA heard from several manufacturers and groups that more time may be needed to meet all of the requirements and has adjusted the enforcement of the incoming rules.

During the first 6 months following the 1 January 2020 compliance date, the FDA now plans to work cooperatively with manufacturers to meet the new Nutrition Facts label requirements and will not focus on enforcement actions regarding these requirements during that time.

As part of the initial rule change, manufacturers with US$10 million or more in annual food sales. Manufacturers with less than this would have an additional year to comply – until 1 January 2021. However, many manufacturers are already using the new label.
