As healthcare systems place greater emphasis on prevention, there is growing scrutiny of the long-term sustainability and broader economic value of evidence-based probiotics across populations.
This question is reviewed in detail in the latest Social Economic Impact Assessment from IPA Europe. Rather than revisiting whether probiotics support health, an area underpinned by an extensive and ever-growing body of clinical research, the report examines the broader consequences of health gains through better-informed probiotic use. Specifically, it addresses whether these health gains can reduce healthcare spending, improve workforce productivity, and enhance quality of life for millions of people.
Using recognised Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and EU Better Regulation methodologies, the assessment estimates that wider adoption of probiotic across seven evidence-supported health areas could deliver up to €10 billion in annual socio-economic benefits across the 27 EU member states.
From clinical efficacy to economic impact
Clinical research remains the foundation of the probiotics sector. Human studies are essential to understanding which strains are effective, for which benefits, at what dose, and in which populations, without this information, meaningful innovation is not possible.
Yet demonstrating efficacy is only the beginning of the probiotics story. Increasingly, there is recognition that evidence-based probiotic interventions can influence economic outcomes, particularly as healthcare systems across Europe are expected to deliver better health outcomes while operating under growing resource constraints.
Aging populations, rising rates of chronic disease and concerns around antimicrobial resistance are placing unprecedented pressures on healthcare systems worldwide and reshaping discussions around prevention and long-term health. In this environment, health interventions capable of delivering incremental improvements at scale become increasingly relevant. Probiotics are not substitutes for medical treatment, but they can complement broader strategies aimed at maintaining health, preventing illness, and reducing avoidable burdens on already stretched systems.
For example, a modest reduction in antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, fewer respiratory infections, improved management of lactose intolerance, or better bowel function may appear relatively limited when viewed in isolation. However, when such benefits are multiplied across millions of people, they have the potential to influence healthcare expenditure, workplace productivity, and quality of life in ways that traditional clinical endpoints alone cannot fully capture.
This population-level perspective sits at the heart of the IPA Europe assessment. It shifts the focus from whether probiotics work to the broader question of how evidence-based probiotic interventions can contribute to healthier populations, more resilient healthcare systems, and greater socio-economic value.
A broader evidence base
Grounded in a substantial body of published research, the report draws on hundreds of clinical publications involving more than 73,000 study participants across multiple probiotic applications. At the same time, the continued advancement of the probiotic field depends on high-quality human studies, strain-specific research, and transparent scientific communication. Without rigorous science, estimates of societal impact carry little weight.
The report also offers an opportunity for more constructive engagement with healthcare professionals and policymakers on how evidence-based probiotics may compliment established approaches to preventive healthcare.
Researchers have an important role in strengthening collaboration across disciplines that have traditionally worked independently. Clinical scientists, microbiologists, epidemiologists, and health economists each bring a unique perspective. Together, they can build a more comprehensive understanding of how validated probiotic interventions influence not only individual health outcomes, but also wider societal and economic outcomes.
Consumers also have a role in this evolution. Recent IPA Europe consumer research found that 79% of respondents want probiotic foods and supplements to be clearly labelled, while more than half say they do not feel sufficiently informed about whether products contain probiotics. As interest in proactive health management continues to grow, expectations for clear, evidence-based information are also increasing. Consistent communication and greater regulatory clarity will help people make informed decisions while supporting responsible innovation across the sector.
