China’s tariffs on Canada: expert weighs in on the protein industry impact

Following Canada’s allocation of tariffs on Chinese-made steel, aluminium and electric vehicles, the nation has hit back with similar measures targeting Canada’s food and agriculture sector.

These tariffs account for more than $2.6bn worth of products — including pea protein, which is a highly popular vegan alternative used in many high-protein functional foods and supplement products.

The protein, which is almost exclusively produced in Canada, will have a 100% tariff applied by China when it is shipped for processing in the region. 

To find out more about how the tariffs will shake up the industry, the impacts on up-and-coming alt proteins and where the sector should go from here, we caught up with world-renowned supplement formulator and biochemistry expert Shawn Wells.
