Lonza Capsugel is celebrating 25 years of commercial availability for its UC-II undenatured type II collagen, marking a milestone for one of the nutraceutical industry's most established joint health ingredients as demand for clinically validated mobility solutions continues to rise.
Originally launched by InterHealth Nutraceuticals in 2001 before becoming part of Lonza Capsugel, UC-II has helped shape the undenatured type II collagen category through a growing body of scientific evidence.
According to the company, the ingredient is supported by more than 20 studies, including 11 human clinical trials, making it the most researched branded undenatured type II collagen ingredient currently available.
Unlike hydrolysed collagen, glucosamine or chondroitin-based products, UC-II is formulated at a low daily dose of 40 mg and works via a distinct mechanism intended to support the body's natural cartilage repair processes.
Clinical studies have demonstrated benefits for joint comfort, flexibility and mobility in healthy, active adults, reinforcing its position within the growing healthy ageing and active lifestyle markets.
"For a quarter of a century, UC-II undenatured type II collagen has set the standard for joint health innovation," said Randy Flick, Director of UC-II & Ingredients Operations at Lonza Capsugel.
In a category often defined by large doses and a range of ingredients, UC-II undenatured type II collagen's low effective dose differentiates it when compared to hydrolysed collagen, or glucosamine and chondroitin.
Alongside ongoing scientific investment, Lonza Capsugel has also expanded its manufacturing capacity by relocating production to its Greenwood, South Carolina facility to support growing global demand.
The company is also broadening applications for UC-II, including the rapidly expanding companion animal nutrition market, where mobility ingredients are seeing increased interest from pet food and supplement manufacturers.
Earlier this year, Lonza introduced its UC-FLEX collagen blend for pet food applications, reflecting this strategic focus.
Looking ahead, Lonza Capsugel says it will continue investing in clinically supported ingredients and consumer insights to help nutraceutical brands develop next-generation joint health products for an increasingly health-conscious and ageing global population.
