According to research from the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that 1.13 billion people worldwide have hypertension, with two thirds of those affected living in low- and middle-income countries.
In addition, one in four men and one in five women have experienced hypertension, and fewer than one in five individuals with hypertension have been able to keep it under control. Owing to this, the disease is a major cause of premature death.
