Will implement its proprietary production process for omega-3s used in food manufacturing

Solarvest BioEnergy, a Canadian algae technology company, has signed agreements with two European contract production facilities for the production of its organic omega-3 products.

The undisclosed manufacturing facilities will implement Solarvest's proprietary production process and algae strains to produce omega-3's to the company's specifications for use in food manufacturing.

Production of high-docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) samples that will be suitable for formulation and testing by prospective customers in the EU and North America has already begun at one of the facilities, allowing customers to formulate and test Solarvest's omega-3's in their existing products and applications. Analysis will be done to generate data for registration as a nutritional food ingredient.

The second facility is producing EU-approved organic products, and Solarvest said it is working with the plant to facilitate commercial scale production using its process technology.

Production at these facilities will coincide with the continued development of the company's capabilities at its plant in Montague, Prince Edward Island (PEI), Solarvest said.

Solarvest said it plans to sell bulk omega-3 product manufactured at the EU facilities to food processors, while its PEI facility will continue to develop downstream processing, finishing procedures and technologies required to produce high value added omega products.

The company's production process is said to be the world's first used to make omega-3 from algae.
