Following on from Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 on consumer access to food information, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has updated its guidance on novel micronutrients as food and/or supplement ingredients.

The new draft guidance applies to sources of vitamins and essential minerals suitable for food fortification or use as food supplements, detailing the importance of an ingredient’s safety and bioavailability.

It also outlines the necessity of scientific data in regulatory submission, which allows the board to “derive conversion factors for new micronutrient sources."

Converstion factors describe the relative bioavailability of a new nutrient source compared to the same source found naturally in food.

A draft is now available for feedback via public consultation, with the EFSA urging nutrition experts and scientists in particular to come forward.

To find out more about the guidelines, NBR spoke with EFSA Nutriton Expert, Silvia Valtueña Martinez.
