Royal DSM is expanding its ‘life’s’ range of algal-sourced omega-3 products with two line extensions. Coinciding with Earth Day 2022, the launch is accompanied by a sustainability-focused campaign aimed to encourage the use of algae-derived omega-3 ingredients.

In expanding the product portfolio, which includes life’s OMEGA and life’s DHA, the company aimed to create an omega-3 alternative to fish oil without impacting marine life, while maintaining quality and potency. DSM has invested, and says it will continue to invest, in developing formulations to meet evolving market needs, while also expanding its production capacities to meet continuing market growth.

life’s OMEGA O1030DS offers both EPA and DHA from a single, sustainable source, the company says, while life’s OMEGA Ultra is DSM’s most potent form of algal omega-3.

“The theme of Earth Day 2022 is ‘Invest In Our Planet’, and that’s exactly the message our new ‘Sea the Difference’ campaign aims to convey. Because between 1970 and 2012, marine life declined by almost 50% - a trend that DSM is determined to lead the omega-3 industry to reverse,” said Brent MacDonald, Global Director Marketing, Nutritional Lipids, DSM. “As fish get their omega-3 from marine algae, making the switch to 100% algal-sourced omega-3s could save 22 million tonnes of fish per year and have a positive impact on countless diverse marine ecosystems.

“71% of the earth’s surface is water, and we are all responsible for making sure our marine life is respected. Our team has worked incredibly hard to deliver solutions that offer exceptional quality omega-3s using sustainable production methods and we will continue to bring to market purpose-led innovations that help protect the health of our planet alongside its people.”
