Going for gold: Brusco launches full flavoured gluten-free ales

Published: 19-Jan-2018

Brusco, a leading British-owned bulk ingredients supplier, has just added its latest gluten-free ale ‘As Good As Gold’ to the extensive list of alcohols that it is able to supply to the UK food and drinks markets

The product allows food processors to add a twist to their usual ranges whilst taking full advantage of the significant ‘Free From’ movement sweeping the supermarket aisles.

Gluten-free beer, which offers manufacturers many new product development opportunities, has the same full flavour as original beers and therefore can be easily switched into traditional products to cater for those with gluten intolerances.

For too long, gluten-free foods have been regarded as an add-on to standard ranges of foods, but in fact, many health-conscious consumers are choosing gluten-free products mindfully whether they are coeliac or not.

Brusco’s bulk gluten-free ales are ideal for purpose. The company’s newest product ‘As Good As Gold’ is 4.5% ABV and comes with simple labelling containing only water, malted barley, hops and yeast.

The ale is created using an advanced process called de-glutenisation, which removes the gluten from the beer so that the product can still be made with the best malted barley and quality hops rather than alternative gluten free ingredients such as rice, sorghum or corn. As a result, the ale’s taste integrity can be maintained and guarantees a final product with a genuine ale flavour.

The ale comes supplied in food-grade containers with a blue ring lock tamper evident cap, ranging in size from 20 litres to 1000 litres to suit short or long production runs.

It makes a tasty addition to a range of gluten-free products such as: sausages, pies, marinades and sauces but could be included as an extra ingredient in more alternative products such as cheeses, fudges, chocolate, jelly and even pickles.

Andrew Ashby, Managing Director at Brusco: “There is currently a lot of research work being undertaken by drinks companies to develop more gluten-free ales. The gluten-free trend is expected to continue on an upwards trajectory. Brusco is keen to establish itself as one of the ‘go to’ bulk alcohol suppliers for UK food manufacturers that wish to tap into this expanding marketplace.”

“We already offer Green King IPA Gluten Free and a Moorland Old Speckled Hen Gluten Free in addition to As Good As Gold, along with a range of certified gluten free wines and spirits. We are very excited to be part of this food revolution and look forward to working with food manufacturers in support of their new and existing ranges.”

According to Mintel research an estimated 15 % of households now “pursue a gluten-free diet as a lifestyle choice as they believe it makes them feel better”. Given the statistics and the fact that those without intolerances can also eat ‘Free From’ products, then food companies should offer old consumer favourites in gluten-free form and also create exciting, new products for a wider range of diets.

Brusco develops bespoke solutions to suit industry needs, and in addition to its gluten-free ales, it is also able to supply soy sauce, pasta and flours in gluten-free form.
