Carob breakthrough: new clinical data in prediabetes unveiled at Vitafoods Barcelona

Published: 22-Apr-2026

Planttech Biotechnology brings together leading researchers and industry participants for a private symposium focused on the scientific and commercial potential of carob-derived bioactives in metabolic health

Held during Vitafoods week in Barcelona, the symposium explores how new scientific evidence of glucose regulation, metabolic dysfunction and nutrition strategy can be translated into practical solutions for everyday life. The programme covers:

  1. Foundational science
  2. Dietary strategy
  3. Product application,

Reflecting Planttech’s belief that credible innovation in metabolic health requires synergy across all three layers.

The event features contributions from internationally recognised experts including Dr Antonio Vidal-Puig, Dr Jordi Salas-Salvadó, Dr Joana Relat, Dr F. Javier López Román and Dr Javier Morán. Topics include:  adipose tissue dysfunction, the Mediterranean Diet, D-pinitol and cellular signaling, modulation of glucose metabolism in subjects with prediabetes, and the communication of proven health benefits.

A highlight of the symposium will be new human clinical data by Dr. Javier López, The study shows that a carob liquid concentrate delivers statistically significant improvements across key metabolic markers, including reductions in HbA1c and meaningful improvements in insulin sensitivity. Working with prediabetic subjects, the findings show clinically relevant modulation of glucose metabolism. Carob bioactives are revaled as a scalable, nutrition-based intervention to slow or prevent progression towards type 2 diabetes.

These results move carob from traditional ingredient to evidence-backed metabolic health solution, opening the door to everyday applications across functional foods, beverages, and targeted nutritional products.

Metabolic health is one of the most important frontiers in nutrition and food innovation

- Ignacio Zaldua, CEO of Planttech Biotechnology Spain, S.L.

“We will create a forum to connect rigorous science with realistic nutritional application and future-facing product innovation.”

The symposium supports Planttech’s wider effort to explore how carob-derived ingredients can contribute to practical, scalable consumer-relevant solutions addressing glucose homeostasis, metabolic balance and accessible everyday nutrition.
