Evonik has launched Lypron, a rumen-protected lysine solution for ruminants.
The product is intended to help livestock nutritionists formulate feed that supplies the right balance of amino acids, particularly lysine.
The company said it developed the innovation in collaboration with Sipena, a French specialist in coating technologies. Sipena will also exclusively manufacture the product for Evonik.
Why this matters
Ruminants, including cattle, sheep and goats, have specialised digestive systems with different compartments that contain microbes that break down and ferment feed.
This creates a challenge for formulators — the microbes may break down some amino acids before the animal can absorb them.
A rumen-protected lysine product is designed to help lysine pass through the rumen without extensive degradation, so more reaches the lower digestive tract, where it can be digested and absorbed.
Evonik says Lypron delivers lysine where it is needed, providing a high, reliable supply of metabolisable lysine (lysine available to the animal for metabolism after digestion).
The product therefore enables producers to balance diets more precisely, boosting profitability by reducing the need for expensive protein sources.
Additionally, by improving dietary amino acid balance, Lypron supports low-protein diets, which will optimise nitrogen utilisation and reduce nitrogen excretion, helping farms lower environmental impact while still maintaining productivity.
“With Lypron, we are expanding our ruminant solutions to complement our established products [such as] Mepron,” said Marion Hax, Head of the Specialty Nutrition Product Line at Evonik Animal Nutrition.
Completing our amino acid balancing concept allows us to support customers in achieving both higher performance and more sustainable feeding strategies.
“Lypron helps nutritionists optimise amino acid supply, increase productivity and reduce reliance on excess dietary protein, which is increasingly important both economically and environmentally,” added Claudia Parys, Global Head of the Ruminant Business at Evonik Animal Nutrition.
