A yeast infection causes serious discomfort (vulvar burning, itching, redness) for women.

It is caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans and Candida glabrata, which are opportunistic pathogens. It is extremely common and approximately 75% of women will experience one during their lifetime.

As such, they often turn to over-the-counter antifungal products or a prescription, which can also disturb the overall balance of the microbiota.

Natural products are preferred whenever possible, leading women to probiotic bacteria supplements. Probiotic strains such as Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri may inhibit the growth of C. glabrata by forming aggregates that stop bacterial colonisation.
