38TERA has launched BDR (Bloating & Digestion Relief), a dual-stage capsule combining peppermint oil and the probiotic yeast ibSium to target digestive discomfort in different areas of the gut.
Formulated by gastroenterologist Dr Will Bulsiewicz and nutrition scientist Simon Hill, BDR uses a capsule-in-capsule delivery system designed to release its two active ingredients at different points in the digestive tract.
The outer capsule contains peppermint oil and is designed to remain intact through the stomach before releasing 180 mg of peppermint oil in the small intestine.
According to 38TERA, the ingredient acts on intestinal smooth muscle to help ease spasms, bloating and discomfort.
A smaller capsule inside contains 250mg of ibSium (Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3856), providing 2 bn CFU per two-capsule serving.
The inner capsule is designed to protect the live probiotic yeast as it passes through the upper digestive tract before releasing it closer to the colon.
The company says ibSium works by supporting bowel regularity and reducing gut sensitivity rather than permanently colonising the digestive tract.
Both ingredients have been investigated in clinical research.
38TERA cites ten randomised controlled trials involving 1030 patients for peppermint oil, as well as the American College of Gastroenterology’s 2021 guidance, which recommends peppermint oil for certain gastrointestinal symptoms.
ibSium is also referenced in the World Gastroenterology Organisation’s 2023 global guidelines and has been studied for effects on bloating and stool consistency.
Gut health portfolio expansion
The formulation is 38TERA’s third product, following DMN for daily microbiome nutrition and RCE for regularity and constipation.
The company stresses that all of its products use named ingredients at clinical doses rather than proprietary blends.
The company also highlighted that BDR has undergone third-party testing for purity, potency and safety through NSF Certified for Sport.
